Picayune Strand Restoration Project: Canals, Pump Stations, and Wildlife

The Picayune Strand Restoration Project includes the construction of three pump stations with spreader canals, plugging 40 miles of canals, and removing 227 miles of roads.The Army Corps of Engineers is currently constructing the Merritt and Faka Union Canal pump stations. When complete, these pump stations will intercept fresh water from canals and help restore overland sheet flow. The project has already restored 13,000 acres and when finished will rehydrate drained wetlands, improve estuarine waters, and return habitat to threatened wildlife.
