From 1964 to 1987, the park was known as The Davie Landfill. Today, it is a land reclamation and water protection success story. In the early 1970’s, the site was originally designed to be used as an incinerator and a sludge lagoon. The lagoon was an unlined natural depression able to accept septic tank waste and municipal sludge. Studies found that the leachate from the lagoon was contaminating the Biscayne Aquifer. Closure of the on-site incinerator in 1975 and the sludge lagoon in 1981 were the result of Broward County’s initiative to stop all liquid and sludge waste dumping at the site.
