Scarring by boats is a serious problem that damages seagrass beds, which can take several years to recover. Some damage is so bad that it must be physically repaired with filling and planting of seagrass plugs. In addition, stakes are placed around the repaired areas to encourage birds to perch and do their business -- poop -- in order to fertilize the newly planted seagrass beds. Florida Department of Environmental Protection helps fund and manage seagrass restoration along with other agencies.
